With more than four months remaining before the 2026-27 college basketball season tips off, Kentucky continues to be viewed as one of the nation’s better teams, even if the Wildcats aren’t entering the year with the same sky-high expectations they carried last offseason.
After beginning last season as a consensus top-10 team and a legitimate national championship contender, Kentucky fell short of those expectations, finishing the year with a 22-14 record and advancing only to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
This time around, the Wildcats are starting from a different position.
Rather than being expected to dominate from day one, Mark Pope’s rebuilt roster is projected to begin the season just outside the top 15, giving the team an opportunity to climb the rankings as the year unfolds.
Recent updates from ESPN and CBS Sports reflect that outlook following offseason coaching changes, transfer additions across the country, and injuries that have reshaped several contenders.
ESPN kept Kentucky at No. 17 in its latest “Way-Too-Early” Top 25, showing confidence that the Wildcats remain one of the nation’s strongest teams despite the offseason turnover.
A major reason for that optimism is transfer forward Milan Momcilovic. ESPN highlighted the former Iowa State standout as Kentucky’s most impactful newcomer, praising his elite shooting ability after he averaged 16.9 points per game while knocking down 48.7 percent of his three-point attempts last season. After withdrawing from the NBA Draft, Momcilovic chose Kentucky over other high-profile programs, immediately becoming one of the Wildcats’ biggest stars and a potential All-America candidate.
ESPN also projected Kentucky’s starting lineup to feature Washington transfer Zoom Diallo at point guard, Providence transfer Alex Wilkins on the wing, Momcilovic at forward, international addition Ousmane N’Diaye in the frontcourt, and returning big man Malachi Moreno anchoring the paint.
CBS Sports was even slightly more optimistic, moving Kentucky up one spot from No. 17 to No. 16 in its updated rankings.
The Wildcats benefited from movement elsewhere after St. John’s dropped following Donnie Freeman’s season-ending Achilles injury.
CBS Sports pointed to Kentucky’s returning experience, led by Malachi Moreno, along with one of the country’s strongest transfer classes. Pope added several proven contributors, including Momcilovic, Zoom Diallo, Franck Kepnang, Jerone Morton, Justin McBride, Alex Wilkins, and Ousmane N’Diaye, while also welcoming highly regarded freshman Mason Williams.
Although Kentucky isn’t receiving the preseason hype it did a year ago, the Wildcats remain firmly in the national conversation. With an experienced roster filled with talented transfers and impact newcomers, Mark Pope’s squad has plenty of opportunities to outperform expectations once the season begins.
