Kentucky fans waited all night to hear Otega Oweh’s name called, and when it finally happened, it was worth the wait. The Wildcats star is officially headed to the NBA after being selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the No. 41 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
The selection marks another major milestone for Mark Pope’s Kentucky program, as Oweh joins Jayden Quaintance as Wildcats chosen in this year’s draft. It also gives Pope four NBA Draft picks during his tenure as Kentucky’s head coach.
For Oweh, the landing spot couldn’t be much better. Oklahoma City is fresh off an NBA championship run and has built a reputation as one of the league’s best player-development organizations. The Thunder have consistently turned overlooked prospects into valuable contributors, giving Oweh a tremendous opportunity to carve out a role at the next level.
The former Wildcat will also have familiar company. Oklahoma City already features former Kentucky stars Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the two-time reigning NBA MVP, and defensive standout Cason Wallace. Learning alongside players who once wore Kentucky blue could help accelerate Oweh’s transition to the professional game.
Oweh’s path to this moment was anything but ordinary.
After beginning his college career at Oklahoma, he developed into a reliable contributor before transferring to Kentucky ahead of Mark Pope’s first season in Lexington. While several of Pope’s additions received more attention, Oweh quickly emerged as one of the team’s most important players.
His breakout 2024-25 campaign saw him average 16.2 points and 4.7 rebounds per game while earning All-SEC Second Team honors. He became known for his toughness, scoring ability, and knack for delivering in big moments, including memorable game-winning performances against his former team.
Rather than immediately pursuing the NBA, Oweh chose to return for one final season at Kentucky.
That decision paid off.
Despite battling through a foot injury that slowed him early in the year, Oweh finished the 2025-26 season playing the best basketball of his career. He averaged 21.1 points per game during SEC competition and consistently carried Kentucky’s offense against elite opponents.
One of his most unforgettable moments came in the NCAA Tournament when he drilled a dramatic game-tying halfcourt shot at the buzzer against Santa Clara, adding another iconic play to his growing Kentucky legacy.
Throughout the draft process, Oweh remained confident in his ability to succeed at the next level.
“I feel like I’m going to have a real successful NBA career,” Oweh said before the draft. “My biggest thing is making an impact on whatever team I’m on. My brothers always said the cream will rise to the top. Continue to work, continue to do what you do, and you’re going to be seen.”
Now, he’ll have the chance to prove it.
Few players have left a bigger mark on the early Mark Pope era than Otega Oweh. From overlooked transfer to SEC star and NBA Draft pick, his story is one of persistence, growth, and determination.
The next chapter begins in Oklahoma City, and Kentucky fans will be watching every step of the journey.
