Some basketball connections are built over years, and for Kentucky’s Malachi Moreno and Zoom Diallo, that connection has finally come full circle.
Before becoming teammates in Lexington, Moreno and Diallo first crossed paths in 2023 at the Adidas Next Gen Eurocamp, an international showcase that featured several future college stars. Among the players in attendance were current Kentucky forward Ousmane N’Diaye, former Wildcat guard Travis Perry, and even Kentucky legend Rajon Rondo, who served as a coach during the event.
That experience helped create a friendship between Moreno and Diallo long before either player imagined sharing a college locker room.
According to Moreno, the two stayed connected throughout their basketball journeys while competing on the Adidas circuit. Even though they played for different programs, they frequently found themselves around each other and developed a strong relationship.
When Diallo entered the transfer portal and Kentucky became involved in his recruitment, head coach Mark Pope leaned on Moreno to help strengthen the Wildcats’ pitch. Moreno was more than happy to help bring one of his closest basketball friends to Lexington.
“One of the main guys Coach Pope kept me in contact with was Zoom Diallo,” Moreno said. “We had been good friends for a while and always wanted to play together. He ended up at Washington and I ended up here, but the stars aligned, and now he’s here with me. Now I’ve got my favorite point guard.”
After earning All-SEC Freshman Team honors and weighing his NBA options, Moreno returns to Kentucky with even bigger expectations. The talented big man is expected to play a major role in the Wildcats’ offense while anchoring the defense and controlling the paint.
Diallo arrives in Lexington as one of Kentucky’s most important offseason additions. Mark Pope targeted creators in the transfer portal, and Diallo’s ability to attack the basket and create opportunities for teammates made him one of the most attractive options available.
Moreno believes Diallo’s physical style of play could be a huge weapon in the SEC.
“He’s a bully guard,” Moreno explained. “That helps in this league. Otega Oweh was so successful because he could muscle his way into the paint and create shots for himself and others. Having a guy like Zoom who can do those things is a recipe for success.”
That comparison to Oweh is one Kentucky fans will pay attention to. Oweh’s aggressive attacking style was a major reason for the Wildcats’ success, and Diallo could bring many of those same qualities to next season’s roster.
With Diallo running the offense and Moreno patrolling the paint, Kentucky may already have the foundation for one of the SEC’s most exciting player combinations. Their years of familiarity could help accelerate the chemistry-building process and give the Wildcats a significant advantage heading into the 2026-27 season.
For Moreno and Diallo, this partnership has been years in the making.
For Kentucky fans, it may be the beginning of something special. As summer workouts continue and the season draws closer, all eyes will be on what could become one of Mark Pope’s most important duos yet.
