Jamal Crawford continues to keep Kentucky fans guessing.
The former NBA star and three-time Sixth Man of the Year remains one of the most talked-about names connected to Kentucky basketball’s open assistant coaching position. While Crawford has previously expressed interest in joining Mark Pope’s staff, his latest comments have reignited questions about whether his future lies in Lexington or at the professional level.
Crawford is no stranger to basketball success. Over a remarkable 20-year NBA career, he scored more than 19,000 points and built a reputation as one of the league’s most creative and dynamic scorers. Now, coaching appears to be the next chapter in his basketball journey.
He has already begun building experience on the sidelines. Crawford currently serves as an assistant coach at Rainier Beach High School in Seattle, where he helps coach his son, JJ Crawford, one of the nation’s top young prospects. He also coaches NW Rotary’s 16U team on the Nike EYBL circuit, giving him valuable experience working with elite young talent.
Kentucky’s assistant coaching vacancy has remained open since Alvin Brooks III departed for NC State earlier this year. The position has stayed unfilled for months, leading many around Big Blue Nation to wonder if the Wildcats are waiting on Crawford’s decision.
However, a recent social media post from Crawford added another layer to the conversation.
While watching the NBA Finals, Crawford confidently shared his belief that he can coach at the highest level of basketball.
“I know for a fact I can coach in the NBA… 1,000%.”
That statement immediately sparked debate among Kentucky fans. While many still believe Crawford could eventually join Mark Pope’s staff, others now wonder whether NBA opportunities could become too attractive to ignore.
Several professional coaching positions remain available, and Crawford’s experience, reputation, and relationships throughout the league would make him a legitimate candidate for NBA coaching roles.
The good news for Kentucky is that Crawford has previously stated that if he decides to coach in college basketball, Kentucky would be his preferred destination. Other schools have reportedly shown interest, but the Wildcats remain the only college program he has publicly connected himself to.
Adding Crawford to Pope’s staff would be a major win for Kentucky. His NBA pedigree, player-development experience, and recruiting appeal could make an immediate impact both on the court and on the recruiting trail. Alongside Pope and former NBA guard Mo Williams, Crawford would help form one of the most recognizable staffs in college basketball.
For now, though, no decision appears imminent. Crawford remains focused on coaching his AAU team through Peach Jam later this summer, meaning Kentucky fans may have to wait a little longer for clarity.
Until then, the debate continues: Will Jamal Crawford choose Kentucky, or will an NBA opportunity ultimately pull him away from Lexington? Big Blue Nation is watching closely for the answer.
