Some major updates surrounding Kentucky athletics — especially for Mark Pope and the Wildcats basketball program.
The biggest headline? Kentucky and Gonzaga are officially ending their six-game basketball series earlier than expected.
The Wildcats were originally scheduled to host Gonzaga in 2026 before traveling to Spokane for the final matchup in 2027, but both programs have now mutually agreed to cancel the remaining games. Gonzaga finished with a 3-1 advantage in the series.
Even with the series ending, Kentucky’s future non-conference schedule still looks loaded. Matchups against Kansas, North Carolina, Indiana, and several other major programs remain on deck. The move also opens the door for Mark Pope to potentially add another marquee opponent in the future.
Kentucky Expected to Join Massive New Event
While the Gonzaga news grabbed attention, another scheduling development may be even bigger long term.
According to KSR’s Jack Pilgrim, Kentucky is expected to become part of a new annual event called the “Diamond Cup,” beginning around the 2027-28 season.
The rumored eight-team field includes:
Kentucky
Arizona
UConn
Gonzaga
Indiana
Kansas
Michigan
North Carolina
CBS Sports insider Matt Norlander later added more details, reporting that schools could initially play two games in the event before discussions expand toward a larger four-game format in future years.
Financially, the event could also become huge for participating programs. Schools are reportedly expected to receive around $2.25 million in the opening format, with payouts potentially increasing to $3.75 million in later seasons.
If finalized, the Diamond Cup would instantly become one of the biggest annual events in college basketball.
Bat Cats Still Fighting for NCAA Tournament Spot
Kentucky baseball remains firmly in the NCAA Tournament conversation despite an early SEC Tournament exit.
The Bat Cats currently sit at 31-21 overall with a respectable No. 36 RPI ranking and a 6-6 record in Quad 1 games. Their non-conference strength of schedule has also helped strengthen their resume.
Head coach Nick Mingione made it clear he believes Kentucky belongs in the tournament field.
“We beat the best teams. If you look at our résumé, in order to be considered one of the best teams, you have to beat them,” Mingione said after Tuesday’s loss.
Although Kentucky finished just 13-17 in SEC play, the Wildcats collected five wins over top-10 opponents during the season. Their postseason fate will officially be revealed on Selection Monday next week.
Mark Pope and Staff Aggressively Recruiting Future Stars
Kentucky’s basketball staff was extremely active during the first spring live recruiting period.
Since last weekend, the Wildcats have handed out offers to eight players in the 2027 class and one player in the 2028 class. Kentucky has now offered scholarships to every player ranked inside the top 12 nationally for 2027.
Some of the newest names offered include:
Adan Diggs
King Gibson
Moussa Kamissoko
DeMarcus Henry
Cayden Daughtry
Darius Wabbington
Caleb Ourigou
Lewis Uvwo
Yann Kamagate
Mark Pope’s staff continues to target elite national talent while building relationships early.
Kentucky Football Recruiting Continues to Climb
Will Stein’s first full recruiting cycle is also gaining momentum.
After landing three-star cornerback Miles Brown earlier this week, Kentucky football now owns a top-20 recruiting class nationally according to Rivals rankings.
The Wildcats currently sit 19th nationally and eighth in the SEC with several highly ranked recruits already committed months before signing day.
Another addition may soon follow, with running back Mason Ball expected to announce his commitment this weekend.
SGA Leads Thunder Back Into Series
Former Kentucky star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander once again delivered on the NBA stage Wednesday night.
The Oklahoma City Thunder bounced back in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals with a 122-113 victory over the Spurs, evening the series at 1-1.
SGA finished with:
30 points
9 assists
Several clutch plays late in the game
Cason Wallace also contributed with strong perimeter shooting, while Keldon Johnson added 10 points and five rebounds for San Antonio in the loss.
The series now shifts to Texas for Games 3 and 4.
