Kentucky basketball fans are about to get another summer showdown against Louisville — and this time, the stakes are even bigger.
The Basketball Tournament (TBT) officially announced Monday that the annual event is returning in 2026 with a major change: the winner’s prize has doubled from Big Blue Nation Just Got The Summer Showdown It Was Hoping For — And It Could Get Wild to $2 million. Once again, Kentucky’s alumni team, La Familia, will be in the middle of the action.
La Familia, made up primarily of former Wildcats, is returning for another title chase after making a deep run in previous tournaments. This year’s format, however, will look very different from past editions.
Instead of the traditional 64-team single-elimination bracket, the 2026 tournament will feature only 16 teams split into two categories — alumni squads and non-alumni squads. Even more interesting, the opening round will now be a best-of-three series.
And Kentucky’s first matchup could not be more dramatic.
La Familia will open against The Ville, Louisville’s alumni team, in a renewed chapter of one of college basketball’s fiercest rivalries. The two teams famously met in the 2024 TBT quarterfinals at Freedom Hall, where Kentucky came away with the victory in front of a record-setting crowd of over 13,500 fans. That heated game even ended with tensions boiling over into an on-court altercation after the final buzzer.
Now, the rivalry is back.
Game 1 of the series will take place July 18 at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington, with tipoff scheduled for noon ET. The game will air nationally on Fox. Game 2 will shift to Louisville’s Freedom Hall on July 20, while a potential Game 3 on July 22 will be hosted by whichever team sells the most tickets within 24 hours after the bracket reveal.
The winner of the Kentucky-Louisville series will advance to face either Syracuse’s or Seton Hall’s alumni team on July 26. The alumni bracket championship is scheduled for July 29, while the overall TBT title game will be played Aug. 2 on the home court of the surviving alumni squad.
Several former Wildcats have already been confirmed for La Familia’s roster, including Willie Cauley-Stein, Archie Goodwin and Reid Travis. Cauley-Stein, who has become one of the faces of the team in recent summers, made it clear that Kentucky is entering this tournament with confidence.
“We’ve faced The Ville before and came out on top, and we plan to do it again,” Cauley-Stein said. “La Familia has what it takes to win this series. We’re prepared and motivated to show that we’re the better team.”
Former Kentucky player Jon Hood will once again serve as head coach, while Twany Beckham returns as general manager. Louisville’s roster will feature former Cardinals Russ Smith, Edgar Sosa and Malik Williams.
With millions on the line and one of basketball’s best rivalries taking center stage, this summer’s TBT matchup between Kentucky and Louisville is already shaping up to be must-watch basketball for Big Blue Nation.
