Kentucky head coach Mark Pope is taking a different approach this offseason when it comes to communicating with Big Blue Nation.
Earlier this week, Pope posted a video on social media asking Kentucky fans to send in questions about the basketball program. The response was overwhelming, with thousands of fans submitting questions across X and Instagram.
Over the following days, Pope answered several of those questions in video responses, touching on topics ranging from recruiting frustrations to transfer portal additions and the future of Malachi Moreno.
Here are some of the most notable things Pope shared.
Pope addresses Kentucky’s recruiting struggles
One fan asked Pope whether Kentucky is sometimes being used as leverage by recruits looking to increase their NIL value elsewhere.
Pope gave a direct answer.
“Yes,” he said. “We’re the biggest brand in basketball.”
The comment came after Kentucky missed out on several elite prospects in the 2026 recruiting class. The Wildcats pursued a long list of top-ranked players, including Tyran Stokes, Caleb Holt, Jordan Smith Jr., Deron Rippey Jr., and others, but failed to land many of their primary targets.
Pope specifically referenced Kentucky’s pursuit of Stokes, who eventually committed elsewhere.
“This year we were chasing a generational talent, and we fell a little short,” Pope explained. “But we weren’t sitting on our hands.”
Despite the recruiting disappointments, Pope expressed confidence in the roster Kentucky has assembled for next season.
Malachi Moreno remains a major focus for Kentucky
Another major topic was sophomore center Malachi Moreno, who is currently testing the NBA Draft process while keeping his college eligibility intact.
Pope made it clear how highly Kentucky values Moreno.
“Malachi Moreno was the number one priority for us going into this portal season,” Pope said. “We think he’s going to be the best center in all of college basketball next year here at Kentucky.”
Moreno is expected to participate in the NBA Draft Combine before deciding whether to remain in the draft or return to Lexington.
Pope said Kentucky fully supports Moreno throughout the process.
“This is the place where basketball dreams come true,” Pope said. “Malachi has two dreams: hanging a banner at Kentucky and playing in the NBA.”
Pope also noted that Kentucky continues searching for additional frontcourt help in the transfer portal.
Pope discusses Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins
Pope also shared his first public comments about transfer portal additions Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins.
According to Pope, Kentucky’s staff focused heavily on finding creators and playmakers in the portal.
“One of the top priorities for us going into the portal was finding creators,” Pope said. “These are two of the elite creators in all of college basketball.”
He described Diallo and Wilkins as a potentially dangerous backcourt duo and praised both players for their ability to create offense for themselves and others.
Wilkins joins Kentucky after averaging nearly 18 points per game at Furman, while Diallo arrives from Washington.
Kentucky continues evaluating international talent
Pope also explained Kentucky’s process for scouting international prospects.
The Wildcats recently added 6-foot-11 forward Ousmane N’Diaye from Senegal, who has experience playing professionally in Europe.
Pope said Kentucky evaluates international players through film study, analytics, league competition, and feedback from trusted basketball contacts around the world.
“We go by film, analytics, league, age, trajectory,” Pope explained. “And then when possible, we need to go see guys in person.”
Pope praised N’Diaye’s size, length, and upside heading into next season.
Kam Williams could take a major step forward
Pope also spoke highly of Kam Williams, who battled injuries during the 2025-26 season but returned late in the year.
According to Pope, Williams appears ready for a bigger role moving forward.
The Kentucky coach highlighted Williams’ defensive impact and revealed that the wing has already added weight this offseason, going from 205 pounds to 210 pounds.
As Kentucky continues preparing for the upcoming season, Pope’s social media Q&A gave fans a clearer picture of the program’s current direction and offseason priorities.
