Following the much-anticipated commitment of Zoom Diallo, Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Pope has shifted his attention deeper into the transfer portal as he works to finalize his next roster moves.
At this stage, Kentucky appears close to adding another key piece, but one unresolved issue is currently slowing down the completion of the deal.
Two Top Targets in Focus
The Wildcats have narrowed their attention to two primary transfer targets: Donnie Freeman and Alex Wilkins. Both players recently visited Lexington, and both visits were considered successful, strengthening Kentucky’s position in their respective recruitments.
There is also interest in Sebastian Rancik, who is viewed more as a depth addition rather than a centerpiece signing. He would likely fit into the roster regardless of how the bigger decisions unfold.
What’s Holding the Deal Back
Despite strong momentum, Kentucky is not yet able to finalize its second major signing. Complications tied to competing programs—most notably the aggressive pursuit from Alabama Crimson Tide—along with roster and financial considerations in the transfer portal, are creating delays.
In short, the situation is fluid, and even though Kentucky is in a strong position, nothing is officially locked in yet.
Why Freeman Stands Out
If Kentucky is ultimately forced to prioritize between its top targets, Freeman appears to be the more complete fit for the roster.
At Syracuse Orange, Freeman showed strong production, averaging 16.5 points per game while contributing significantly on the glass with around seven rebounds per contest. He also adds defensive versatility with steals and shot-blocking ability.
His skill set as a stretch forward aligns well with Mark Pope’s system, offering scoring, spacing, and versatility—three areas Kentucky is actively looking to strengthen.
While Kentucky is still in a strong position to land multiple impact players, the delay in finalizing the second signing highlights how competitive the transfer portal has become.
Still, if Pope can resolve the current sticking point, the Wildcats could be on the verge of another major addition that significantly boosts their roster for the upcoming season.
