Lexington, KY Mark Pope just landed his first big backcourt domino for 2026-27, and he’s already telling Big Blue Nation it won’t be the last.
Five-star guard *Zoom Diallo* officially committed to Kentucky on Wednesday, giving the Wildcats a major early win in the 2026 recruiting cycle. The 6’4 combo guard out of Tacoma, Washington is ranked among the top guards in the country, known for his explosive first step, downhill scoring, and high-level playmaking. Diallo chose Kentucky over several other blue-blood suitors after building a strong relationship with Pope and the UK staff.
“This is home,” Diallo said in his announcement. “Coach Pope’s vision, the way they play, the freedom they give guards ,it just felt like the place I can be me and win big.”
For Pope, it’s a statement pickup. Since taking over in Lexington, he’s preached pace, space, and guard empowerment. Diallo fits that mold perfectly: he can initiate offense, attack in transition, and create his own shot late clock. He projects as a day-one impact player who can run Pope’s up-tempo system.
Despite locking down Diallo, Pope made it clear the Wildcats are still actively recruiting more guards for the 2026-27 roster. With roster turnover expected and Pope’s system relying heavily on multiple ball-handlers, the staff is keeping its foot on the gas.
“We love Zoom. He’s a huge piece for us,” a source close to the program said. “But in the way we want to play, you can’t have enough skilled guards. We’re going to keep stacking talent in that backcourt.”
That means Kentucky fans should expect more names to surface soon. Pope’s staff has already been linked to several other top-50 guards in the class, and the Diallo commitment only adds momentum on the trail. In the portal era and with the NBA Draft always looming, depth isn’t a luxury, it’s a requirement.
