The Kentucky–Louisville rivalry always brings the heat — and this year, even the coaches are getting in on the action. When Louisville head coach Pat Kelsey was asked what he thought about the Wildcats ahead of Tuesday’s showdown, he didn’t hold back.
“Obviously, they’re very good… KenPom has them the #1 team in the country for a reason. They’re very talented,” Kelsey said.
That’s high praise coming from a coach who’s about to face a Kentucky team that’s still piecing things together. The Wildcats have been dealing with early-season bumps — Jayden Quaintance sidelined, Jaland Lowe limited, Trent Noah not at 100%, and some chemistry still developing. Yet, even with those challenges, the analytics world has Kentucky at the top.
And that’s where KenPom comes in. For those not familiar, KenPom is the gold standard of college basketball analytics — tracking stats like offensive and defensive efficiency, tempo, and strength of schedule to determine who’s really dominating beneath the surface. The man behind it, Ken Pomeroy, actually started as a weatherman before changing how college hoops are measured forever.
KenPom loves Kentucky for good reason: they force tough shots, take smart ones of their own, and play with a pace that travels. Through two games, that’s been enough to earn them the No. 1 spot nationally.
Still, as most coaches will say, the numbers don’t tell the full story — not yet, anyway. You need about 10 games to truly know what kind of team you have. But Kentucky won’t have to wait long for a reality check. In just a few hours, they’ll walk into the KFC Yum! Center to face their biggest rival in a test that could define their early season.
Can Mark Pope’s squad prove they deserve that top spot — and silence Louisville’s crowd in the process?
We’re about to find out tonight on ESPN.
