It’s game day in the Bluegrass as the Louisville Cardinals host their longtime rivals, the Kentucky Wildcats, in what promises to be an electrifying early-season matchup.
For the first time since 2016, both teams enter the game unbeaten and ranked in the Top 15—Kentucky at No. 9 and Louisville at No. 12, a slight drop from their preseason ranking.
Recent history favors the Wildcats, who have won 14 of the last 17 matchups, including the last three. Louisville’s last victory in the series came in 2020 at the KFC Yum! Center, the very arena that will host Tuesday night’s showdown.
In the lead-up to the game, comments from players on both sides have added fuel to the rivalry. Louisville’s Kasean Pryor has made headlines with his outspoken style, earning praise from UofL head coach Pat Kelsey.
“Kasean’s very much a free spirit,” Kelsey said. “I love him for it because that’s who he is at his core. He’s unapologetically himself.”
Kentucky’s Otega Oweh acknowledged seeing Pryor’s remarks online and is eager to face off. “I can’t wait to see them. That’s all,” Oweh said.
Both teams enter the matchup with strong offensive showings. Louisville has scored over 100 points in each of its first two games, while Kentucky comes off two dominant wins, including a preseason exhibition victory over No. 2 Purdue. This will be Louisville’s first real test against a ranked opponent and a true road challenge.
Kelsey warned that the Cats will be a tough opponent, especially for players new to the rivalry. “KenPom has them ranked the number one team in the country for a reason. They’re very talented, very well-coached, and it’s a big challenge. We’re excited about the opportunity.”
Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m., with tickets starting at $178. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
