In 2016, I said farewell to my Belfast hometown in favour of the glamourous life of a Liverpool-based university student. The most difficult goodbye wasn’t to my family or friends, it was to a small restaurant named Boojum snowballing so quick in popularity it became impossible to find a store without a queue.
The cult favourite specialises in Mexican food crafted by Irish hands. An ironic pairing that has allowed Boojum to expand to almost 20 stores across the UK since launching in 2007 none the less.
The last time I was able to enjoy Boojum was almost a decade ago. I was dumbfounded to discover Liverpool was without a Boojum store given its proximity to Ireland and annual influx of Irish students.
Last week, I was finally reunited with the chain after what felt like a lifetime. The company opened a new shop on Liverpool’s Bold Street following a ludicrously unnecessary absence from the city – the most requested location outside of Ireland.
Boojum’s burritos have addictive qualities and I’ve been desperate for another ever since I left. It’s hard to relay just how delicious Boojum is without sounding ridiculously hyperbolic but I’m yet to experience a better burrito on the market.
“How good can a burrito be?” is a valid question. The answer is simply, “Extremely good.” There’s nothing fancy or exotic so don’t expect unique ingredients imported straight from Mexico City; it’s simply well done, filling and delicious.
