The Reds travelled to St James’ Park on Wednesday night to take on Eddie Howe’s Magpies. Arne Slot had been hoping his side would be able to maintain their nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League.
But Alexander Isak opened the scoring after 35 minutes with a wondergoal. Curtis Jones put the visitors back on level terms when he swept in Mo Salah’s pass five minutes after the break.
Anthony Gordon then regained the lead for Newcastle when he fired in from Isak’s flick. Salah equalised just six minutes later when he slide Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross from six yards out.
Salah then scored what he thought would be the winner seven minutes from time, firing in from another Alexander-Arnold assist. That goal sparked wild celebrations from Carragher, who was watching the game alongside his fellow Stick To Football podcast pundits in an Overlap watchalong.
Carragher jumped onto Gary Neville as he screamed in delight, with the Manchester United legend buried underneath him. Neville kicked Carragher off him and the sofa, with the Liverpool icon going down to the floor head first.
As he crashed to the ground, Carragher’s legs hit the wall, knocking a painting off of its mount. Carragher landed in a heap with the picture falling on top of him.
A technician then had to attend to Neville’s microphone which had been knocked loose while Carragher was celebrating. Carragher was soon left regretting his massive celebration though when Newcastle remarkably equalised.
Caoimhin Kelleher misjudged a deep free-kick delivery, allowing it to float over his head. The Irishman appeared to miss Fabian Schar at the back post, with the Newcastle star losing his marker Alexander-Arnold to slide the ball into the net.
Salah’s performance had led Carragher to U-turn on his stance with regards to Salah’s contract. The Egyptian’s deal will expire in the summer and Carragher had previously insisted Liverpool chiefs should not cave into his demands.
But the former defender changed his tune on Wednesday night after Jones equalised. He said: “Get in, get in Curtis lad, 1-1, get paid, back in the game, Mo Salah, give him what he wants, get in.”
When Salah scored his first goal, Carragher then said: “Give him what he wants!” he then added: “Why don’t they just give him the contract?”
