Trent Alexander-Arnold has been warned against making a move to Real Madrid next summer. Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit believes the vice-captain “can become one of the best players in Liverpool history” if he commits his long-term future to the club.
Alexander-Arnold’s Anfield terms expire at the end of the season and he is less than two months away from being able to speak to clubs outside of England about a pre-contract agreement, with Real Madrid heavily linked.
Reports from Spain have been circulating since the summer about the current Champions League holders’ interest in the Reds’ No.66 but Petit, who won a Premier League and FA Cup double in 1998 with Arsenal, has urged Alexander-Arnold to sign a new deal at his boyhood club.
The contracts of captain Virgil van Dijk and leading goalscorer Mohamed Salah also expire next summer and Petit continued: “[Jurgen] Klopp put the club on a stage, and they should be on that stage forever. They are a club that should always be competing for the biggest prizes in football. The work of [Arne] Slot, that’s been amazing since he’s come in.
“You should ask me this question next May, because we’ll know more about the future of Van Dijk and Mo Salah and Liverpool may have won something by then too.”
Liverpool return to action on Sunday afternoon when they are entertained by Southampton before a clash with Real Madrid at Anfield in the Champions League the following week.
