Liverpool are sweating on a potential injury for Diogo Jota after the striker was forced off during the first half of Sunday’s visit from Chelsea. The No.20 was hurt early on during the game when he was hauled down near the halfway line by centre-back Tosin Adaraiboyo.
In an incident that contained similarities to the one that saw William Saliba dismissed for Arsenal in their 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday evening, Chelsea defender Tosin was controversially only given a yellow card by referee John Brooks, despite being the last man back for the visitors.
Portugal international Jota was given treatment at the time and initially played on before he was forced to concede defeat and come off for Darwin Nunez, with the Reds 1-0 up thanks to Mohamed Salah’s penalty.
Jota lasted just 31 minutes before being replaced by Uruguay striker Nunez, who caught the eye following his introduction, setting up Curtis Jones for what ended up being a penalty that was overturned by referee Brooks after a check at the pitchside monitor.
It’s unclear the severity of Jota’s issue presently with head coach Arne Slot set to update after the game. Liverpool travel to RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday night before a trip to Arsenal in the Premier League next Sunday.
The Reds are currently without goalkeeper Alisson Becker, Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott with various injuries.
