Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez was in action for Uruguay on Saturday night, as they suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat to Peru in their World Cup qualifier in Lima.
Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez has taken to social media to express his disappointment following Uruguay’s unexpected 1-0 defeat against Peru on Saturday. The late goal from Miguel Araujo was a blow for Nunez’s team in their World Cup qualifier.
This victory marked Peru’s first win in 10 qualifying matches, lifting them from the bottom of the South American table. Despite the loss, Uruguay still hold the third position and are on track to qualify for the 2026 tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
In CONMEBOL, each country competes against the other nine, both at home and away. After 18 rounds, the top six teams will secure their spots in the World Cup.
The seventh-placed team will enter the FIFA play-off tournament, providing an alternative route to the showcase.
Nunez has since issued a rallying cry to his teammates on social media, calling for improvement ahead of Uruguay’s home clash with Ecuador on Wednesday. “Work to improve, there is no other [way],” he posted in Spanish on Instagram, adding, “Go Uruguay always!”
Nunez was spared criticism by the Uruguayan media after the defeat, with El Pais highlighting him as one of their better players, noting that “he was the one who tried the most, but was very alone in attack”.
Initially, the 25 year old was expected to be suspended for Uruguay due to his involvement in Copa America controversy this summer. However, a successful appeal from his country meant he was available to play against Peru.
Since making his debut for Uruguay in 2019, Nunez has netted an impressive 13 goals in just 30 appearances.
