Liverpool were one of the quietest clubs in the summer transfer window despite obvious holes in the squad that needed filling under new manager Arne Slot.
The departures of Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip left the Reds short in central midfield and centre-back respectively, with the Anfield side, ultimately, failing to address these glaring issues in the market.
Although Liverpool’s form this season has been exceptional under Slot, additions are needed in January if the Dutch coach is to have the bodies needed to get Merseyside giants over the line in the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and cup competitions.
And Liverpool could look to sign a former Manchester United wonderkid in 2025.
Liverpool showing strong interest in Benfica’s Alvaro Carreras
According to AS, Liverpool are showing ‘the most interest’ in signing Benfica defender Alvaro Carreras, who spent four years in United’s academy before making the move to Portugal this summer, where the 21-year-old has since flourished.
Winner of the prestigious Jimmy Murphy award during his time at Old Trafford, Carreras has this season established himself as Benfica’s starting left-back after impressing on loan with the Lisbon giants in the last campaign.
And as per the report, Carreras is starting to attract some big interest from across Europe from the likes of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, though it’s Liverpool who are currently showing the strongest intent of signing the Spanish youth international.
Indeed, it’s been some years since Liverpool opted to bring in a player with strong links to Premier League rivals United, yet with the Reds in need of a long-term left-back option to one day succeed Andy Robertson, Carreras could be a great signing for the Anfield side despite his Manchester roots.
Liverpool might have to be quick if they want to sign Carreras
Benfica seem to have one outstanding youngster every season who eventually goes on to recoup a huge amount in the transfer market after being sold to one of Europe’s elite, and Carreras looks like a prime candidate to be this year’s player.
The 21-year-old has excelled at Benfica this season with the defender looking like a real star for the future and a player who could play in some of the biggest leagues in the world if he continues at his current pace.
And for Liverpool, they might have to be quick to sign Carreras, who could attract even more interest from Europe’s biggest clubs if the Spanish youngster maintains his current form and can stay fit until January.
