Arne Slot was left frustrated after Liverpool failed to really get going, with Callum Hudson-Odoi scoring the only goal of the game.
Paul Merson labelled Liverpool ‘boring’ as they endured a very disappointing defeat in front of their own fans.
Making the loss more surprising was the fact that Slot had been flying high in his early tenure at the club, with three wins from his first three matches.
Seven goals were scored and none were conceded in the victories over Ipswich Town, Brentford and Man United.
Tony Cascarino makes Liverpool prediction after Nottingham Forest loss
But it is now back to the drawing board for Slot and his players, who have lost ground to defending champions Man City.
Pep Guardiola’s side are first on 12 points, three ahead of Liverpool, with Tony Cascarino now sharing the latter’s title chances after their shock loss.
“I don’t like going black and white on things, and go ‘yesterday, lots of things arose and because they’ve lost one game then suddenly it’s all falling apart’,” Cascarino said on talkSPORT.
“I can’t do that. I don’t like doing that. I think Liverpool will make the top four this season, I do not think they’ll win the title.”
Can Arne Slot and Liverpool catch runaway leaders Man City?
It is, of course, very early days in the Premier League title race, although everyone associated with the Reds knows that this is a big blow.
Nine points from four matches is an ideal start for Slot, who was always going to be up against it given that he replaced the legendary Jurgen Klopp in the dugout.
Slot also won over Liverpool fans early on in his tenure with the superb 3-0 win over Man United at Old Trafford.
But a few of the Anfield faithful will believe Slot needs a strong run in the very near future in order to get things back on track.
Man City look near unstoppable once more, with four wins from four and a league-high 11 goals scored already.
