Goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah were enough to secure the Reds three points on the opening day of the new Premier League campaign, with Liverpool managing to hold on with a clean sheet despite some good pressure from Ipswich.
With Alan Shearer hailing Trent Alexander-Arnold’s performance, Liverpool had a lot of bright moments in their 2-0 win at Portman Road, with Arne Slot getting his tenure as the new manager at Anfield off to the ideal start.
And Gary Neville now thinks two Liverpool players are set for a huge year.
Alexander-Arnold and Salah tipped to cause rivals problems
Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast, the pundit predicted Alexander-Arnold and Salah to cause real problems for rival teams this season, with the Liverpool duo working well off each other in Saturday’s win against Ipswich.
Neville said on Alexander-Arnold and Salah’s partnership: “I was saying to one of the Sky producers from Monday Night Football earlier on today about the amount of times that Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold have played together now, over hundreds of games it must be.
“The amount of success they have had down on that right-hand side, attacking with Trent’s passing and Salah’s movement, you just saw some real quality in the last goal where obviously he played it inside him.
“It’s just something you have got to face. You are going to face teams that don’t have to be at their best, but can deliver in moments and can deliver world-class moments through world-class players, and that’s what Ipswich found yesterday.”
Alexander-Arnold and Salah worked off each other as well as they ever have in Liverpool’s win against Ipswich on the weekend, with the England international constantly finding his attacking teammate down the right-wing.
And as we head further into the season, there’s a real chance that the duo will be key for Liverpool in their bid for success this year under Slot, who will want to win silverware in his first year at Anfield.
Indeed, Liverpool could be a potential dark horse for the Premier League title if they can bring in one or two more players before the window shuts, and Alexander-Arnold and Salah’s form will be influential for the Reds if they’re to stand a chance at winning trophies this season.
