Dominik Szoboszlai helped Arne Slot get off to the ideal start as Liverpool manager as they beat Ipswich Town.
Liverpool won their Premier League opener 2-0 at Portman Road, with Virgil van Dijk and Luis Diaz impressed by Szoboszlai.
The Hungarian played the entire 90 minutes for Slot against the newly promoted club, but Szoboszlai has been told to step up.
Szoboszlai slotted into midfield with Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch as attackers Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah found the back of the net.
All three midfielders played the entire match on the road, with Slot changing three of his back four throughout the match.
Dominik Szoboszlai explains his role at Liverpool
Liverpool fans were given a great insight into the mind of their new manager, who had already impressed in pre-season.
But the trip to Ipswich was the one that mattered, with midfield star Szoboszlai now revealing what his manager has asked of him in midfield.
“Well, we played differently a little bit because we played with one No.6 and two No.8s, with one of the No.8s dropping as a No.6,” Szoboszlai told the Liverpool website.
“Now we played with one No.6, one No.8 and one No.10, and I had the role of the No.10. But still sometimes I can drop, sometimes I can stay. It’s just different.
“I think I have more offensive work with the ball but without the ball I still have to do my stuff anyway, so the same as last season.”
Will Dominik Szoboszlai keep his place under Arne Slot?
Dominik Szoboszlai moved to Anfield from RB Leipzig last summer as part of the Merseyside club’s major midfield rebuild.
And he slotted into Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI effortlessly, with the midfielder becoming an immediate hit in England.
But his importance in the side slowly faded, with Szoboszlai now needing to maintain his performance levels this time around.
He is competing with many talented players for a starting place under Slot, which will become more difficult if a new midfielder is brought in.
For now, however, Szoboszlai is seemingly high on Slot’s midfield list, particularly after the failure to sign Martin Zubimendi.
