TalkSPORT pundit Andy Townsend says Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold should be considered a vastly superior player to Arsenal defender Ben White.
There has been plenty of debate about White’s absence from the England squad for the European Championships but Townsend said that the Three Lions have plenty of players, such as Trent, who can offer more to the team:
“Trent, I think he’s miles better than Ben White. White played very, very well and I’m not disputing that he’s a very good player, but I think if England are looking to kick on and get over the line in tournaments I don’t think the answer is playing White at right-back.”
You won’t be hearing any arguments from Liverpool supporters about Townsend’s remarks, although it remains to be seen if Gareth Southgate’s successor in the England job agrees.
Alexander Arnold had a difficult Euro 2024
It’s fair to say that the 25-year-old didn’t have the happiest of summers, having been dropped from England’s starting eleven after the first two group fixtures in Germany.
Alexander-Arnold played only 11 minutes in the five subsequent matches at the tournament as the Three Lions made it to the final.
His Liverpool future remains in doubt
There has been a lot of speculation in recent days about whether Alexander-Arnold will leave Anfield at the end of next season. His current deal is set to expire in June.
Some reports have claimed that talks have begun over a new contract but it doesn’t appear as if an announcement about an extension is imminent.
Real Madrid are known to be keeping close tabs on Alexander-Arnold’s situation but it is felt that the European Champions will only make a move if it becomes clear that he will leave the Reds on a free transfer next year.
