Though coaches may share similar philosophies, their methods of training may be different.
From the outside looking in, some training techniques may look weird and unusual.
However, more often than not, there is method behind the madness.
Liverpool’s new goalkeeper coach, Fabian Otte, cut his holiday short to join the squad earlier than expected.
Thanks to his early arrival, we have gotten a glimpse as to his training techniques, and well… they are a bit out of the ordinary.
A video posted on X shows Liverpool goalkeepers training with sunglasses that impair vision. The caption also states that keepers are training with noise cancelling headphones.
You need sight to play in goal, that much is clear.
However, it seems that by taking away the goalkeeper’s sight in training, Otte is training them to rely on their hearing as well.
This could help Liverpool’s goalkeepers communicate better with their on-field counterparts, reducing the chances of mistakes.
Though Otte’s training methods may seem bizarre to some, remember he has a doctorate in sports psychology, so he probably knows what he is doing.
Otte also has plenty of experience, training goalkeepers at Burnley, Hoffenheim, Borussia Monchengladbach, and for the United States Men’s National team.
Caoimhin Kelleher, who’s the subject of intense transfer speculation, shared his thoughts on Fabian Otte’s novel methods.
“It’s great that Fabian has come in now, looks really good, really interesting. Full of energy as well, which is good,” Kelleher said (via This Is Anfield).
“Full of energy as well, which is good.”
“Probably brings some new ideas as well which is good for the goalkeepers. It’s new and exciting, looking forward to it.”
