Jannik Sinner to become World No. 1 after Novak Djokovic’s Roland Garros withdrawal

Jannik Sinner will make history when the new tennis rankings are revealed on Monday, June 10, 2024, as he ascends to World No. 1. This change follows Novak Djokovic’s withdrawal from Roland Garros due to a knee injury.
    Why Sinner Displaces Djokovic

Novak Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, needed to reach the Roland Garros final to retain his No. 1 ranking. Unfortunately, Djokovic’s ambition was thwarted by a right knee injury, forcing him to withdraw before his quarterfinal match against Casper Ruud, a rematch of last year’s final.

    Djokovic’s Injury and Withdrawal
Djokovic’s injury and subsequent withdrawal from the French Open marked a significant moment in the tournament. The 37-year-old was scheduled to face Ruud on Wednesday but will not compete due to his knee issue.

Sinner Reacts to Becoming World No. 1
The news of Djokovic’s withdrawal emerged during the third set of Jannik Sinner’s quarterfinal victory over Grigor Dimitrov. Sinner was informed of his impending new ranking before his post-match interview on Philippe-Chatrier.

“What can I say. First of all, it is every player’s dream to become No. 1 in the world,” Sinner said after his straight-sets win over Dimitrov. “In the other way, seeing Novak retiring here I think is disappointing. I wish him a speedy recovery.”
    Historic Achievement for Italy
Jannik Sinner’s rise to the top is historic, as he will be the first Italian player to reach World No. 1 since the ATP Rankings were established in 1973. This milestone marks a significant achievement for Italian tennis.
    What’s Next for Sinner?
With Tuesday’s win, Sinner remains undefeated in Grand Slams in 2024, boasting a perfect 12-0 record at majors this season. Sinner will next face either Carlos Alcaraz or Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-final as he continues his quest for another Grand Slam title.

As Sinner prepares for the next round, the tennis world eagerly anticipates his performance and the official confirmation of his new status as World No. 1.
