Liverpool fans are waiting impatiently to hear from new head coach Arne Slot. And it seems the supporters are not the only ones.
There was plenty happening on Slot’s first day, June 1, but nothing by way of any public-facing content. Nothing has so far been forthcoming since then, either, in a marked contrast to all of the messages to fans surrounding Jurgen Klopp’s goodbye.
And now Andy Robertson has revealed that he is also yet to hear from Slot. The left-back expressed excitement over the new era at Anfield, but confirmed that there has so far been radio silence.
“I haven’t spoken to him yet,” Robertson admitted to Sky Sports after Scotland kicked off its Euro 2024 preparations last night with a 2-0 win over Gibraltar. “I think he’s leaving us to focus on the Euros.”
That’s as good a theory as any, even if Slot might have been expected to touch base with his new charges by now. He will get a chance to properly meet the players from July 1 when pre-season gets underway, although those involved in international tournaments will return a little later, with the exact dates to be determined by how far they go in their respective competitions.
Despite being left to concentrate on Scotland for the time-being, Robertson sounded optimistic for the future. While thanking Klopp, he conceded that a fresh start could be helpful.
“It’s an exciting new challenge,” he said. “Obviously the old era was pretty special and I’ve got a lot to be thankful for for that manager but obviously excited now by the new manager coming in — new ideas, new voice — and I’m really excited for what can come with that.
“I’ve got no doubts we can keep that momentum going. From all the reports we’ve had, the manager’s very good and I can’t wait to see that up close.”
While this is something of an awkward limbo phase, with players and fans alike relying on ‘reports’ of Slot and not much else, it won’t be long at all before the former Feyenoord boss gets to really leave his mark at Anfield. The Euros and the Copa America will cause a slight further hold-up, but after Klopp lasted nearly nine years at the helm, we can all afford to wait another few weeks.
