Liverpool may have got some help from rivals Manchester United in the upcoming transfer market, with their FA Cup victory potentially benefitting the Reds.
Arne Slot will be looking to shape his squad ahead of the new season, which means bringing some of his own players to the club during the summer transfer window. That has led to a lot of links over the past few weeks.
One of the latest is the club’s reported interest in Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. Spanish outlet AS claim that the Reds have joined Manchester City and Arsenal in the race for the Brazilian.
The Magpies may be reluctant to sell their star midfielder, especially one as loved by the fans as Guimaraes is, but they could be forced to by the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Following the final Premier League game of the season, Newcastle thought that they had been given a financial boost with a seventh-place finish usually enough to earn them a place in the Europa Conference League.
That was however taken away by Manchester United’s FA Cup win. After beating Man City 1-0 at Wembley and finishing outside of the European places, they grabbed themselves a place in the Europa League.
But that means that sixth-place Chelsea dropped down to the Europa Conference League and Newcastle dropped out of Europe altogether. Speaking just days ago, manager Eddie Howe said to ChronicleLive: “European qualification is massive in terms of revenue. It plays a part in the future.”
He then made an admission about outgoing transfers over the summer: “I don’t think it will be an overhaul but I am not in control of it,” he said. “Some things might happen so you don’t know. I have seen it so many times where things you don’t expect unfold. So we have to be ready to adapt.
“I think the most important thing that must happen is we have a stronger squad at the end of this window when we leave it. But there’s no guarantees of that. I can only work as hard as I possibly can to make sure it happens.”
The revenue that Newcastle will miss out on due to no European football will come as a big blow to the club, and it’s one that they may have to make up elsewhere. One way to do so is by selling players in the summer.
That could be good news for Liverpool given their reported interest in Guimaraes. Manchester United could therefore have done them a massive favour.
