Skip Bayless has never shied away from making his thoughts known that Tom Brady, not Bill Belichick, was the reason for the New England Patriots’ two-decade run of success.
Charles Barkley, however, doesn’t see it that way, and called out the talking head during a recent appearance on “The Dan Patrick Show.”
“Let me tell you how stupid some of these guys are on television. You know how much I hate Skip Bayless. I hate him with every fiber. Sometimes he makes me want to gain weight back so I can hate him with even more weight,” Barkley said. “He goes on television and says, ‘If it wasn’t for Tom Brady, Bill wouldn’t have all these championships.’ I’m like, well, Bill’s the greatest coach ever. He says, ‘He only won the Super Bowls because of Tom Brady.’ Well, Andy Reid’s a great coach. Exactly how many championships has he won without Patrick Mahomes?
“To sit there and say Bill only won championships because of Tom Brady? That’s stupid and asinine,” he added.
After Brady left the Patriots in 2020, he immediately won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Belichick struggled to find success post-Brady, and is now out of the job for the 2024 coaching cycle. The 71-year-old will likely return to coach an NFL team in 2025, and it will be interesting to see if Belichick has success with a fresh start.
Brady and Belichick won six Super Bowls together, set a slew of team and NFL records and were the team to beat for 20 years. The two clearly worked well together, and Brady was able to continue to have success without Belichick.
Regardless of Belichick’s lack of success since 2020, Barkley isn’t buying the notion that the quarterback was more responsible for the dynasty than the coach.
