Higgins signing the $21 million franchise tag would give Cincinnati more time to negotiate with the star receiver, or at least help them get paid. Other teams can still negotiate, but the Bengals will likely take any offer they receive. If they don’t match, they will receive two first-round picks from the team that signed Higgins.
Sports Illustrated NFL expert Albert Breer wrote that Higgins was on the table, but such a scenario proved rare. Higgins’ price tag has yet to be disclosed, but ESPN’s Bill Barnwell wrote last October that the 25-year-old could be a first-round pick. If Higgins is acquired by the Bengals, it wouldn’t be the best scenario for other interested teams. Among them is the New England Patriots. However, the option still remains for Higgins to play the 2024 campaign elsewhere.
The Bengals have Ja’Marr Chase under contract, and the No. 5 of 2021 is also approaching a new deal. Chase has one year left on his fifth-year option, which Cincinnati will pick up this offseason. But it’s fair to assume that Chase is eyeing the next deal as well. That could force the Bengals to trade for Higgins. Interested teams would have to give up more to move Higgins if he were to receive the franchise tag.
