When Arthur Blank and company decided to go in a different direction as head coach, Belichick didn’t dwell on the verdict.
According to ESPN NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler, Belichick was “clearly disappointed” when the Suns hired Raheem Morris to replace Arthur Smith. The 71-year-old has not taken another head coaching job in Foxboro, Mass., in recent weeks and his next opportunity may have to wait until 2025.
Fowler added more context to Belichick’s candidacy in Atlanta, where the future Pro Football Hall of Famer doesn’t want to “force” the front office. Blank issued a similar statement Friday, saying the Patriots legend didn’t ask to oversee the entire staff when he talked to team officials about a coaching start.
Failing to land a job with the Falcons and leaving the league after one season could help Belichick, who seems to have never strayed from tunnel vision during his 24-year tenure with the Patriots. Taking a year off will give Belichick a different perspective on the NFL and make him more attractive next year.
Insiders expect Belichick to be a hot commodity as well. The coaching icon could also garner serious interest from the league’s top organization.
