The Patriots’ decision to move on from Bill Belichick had absolutely nothing to do with his coaching skills, and apparently New England didn’t like the decisions he made as an executive. In recent weeks, it has become harder to argue this point. To revitalize the organization, the Patriots have made a number of moves, but for the most part, they seem intent on keeping most things the same.
New England decided to follow through with their succession plan and promote Jerod Mayo as head coach. Since then, he has kept most of his defensive coaches and most of the front office has returned despite their new roles. An article written by CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones on Saturday deserves some credit.”The lack of personnel movement suggests those in charge in New England believe the team’s biggest problem in free agency and the draft no longer exists: Belichick,” Jones wrote.
Belichick has had a rough season as the Patriots’ head coach. He’s dead, but his decisions to pay JuJu Smith-Schuster and DeVante Parker, trade Shaq Mason, deal Mack Jones and let Matt Patricia run the offense are very clearly weak spots. That put New England behind and gave the organization a chance to catch up this season.
Belichick’s last offensive coach has been replaced by new faces with history with new head coach Elliot Wolff. We don’t know what the Patriots will do in the draft and free agency yet, but you can bet it will feel different with the greatest coach of all time.
