It was only a matter of time before Patriots coach Jerod Mayo convinced one of his former teammates to join the New England coaching staff, but it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise.
Dont’a Hightower is back with the Patriots.
After just two years as a player, Hightower will return to New England, according to his agency, SportsTrust Advisors. It seemed inevitable, as Mayo said he would try to hire Hightower if the opportunity to become a head coach arose.
“I think Hightower is going to be a great coach.” Mayo said. “… If I ever get the chance to pilot my ship, I will hire him. I had the opportunity to play and train with him. There aren’t many people as smart as Hightower.According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Hightower is expected to be the inside linebackers coach, with the possibility of adding one remaining outside coach.
Hightower won three Super Bowls in nine seasons with the Patriots, earning a pair of Pro Bowls along the way. Now he’s trying to gain some credibility in the coaching world.
