The Patriots hired offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt in early February, making the final decision after interviewing a very long list of candidates. Ultimately, it was a team choice, but many believe New England general manager Eliot Wolf approved Van Pelt’s arrival because of his experience with the Cleveland Browns and Green Bay Packers.
However, the decision was made along with several other notable names, including a variety of selections who helped conduct the interview. According to Albert Bree of Sports Illustrated, Patriots coach Jerod Mayo, director of player personnel Matt Groh, Wolff and vice president of football operations and senior advisor to the head coach Robin Glazer conducted interviews with New England offensive coordinator candidates.
Patriots owners Robert Kraft and Jonathan Kraft were not named to the group. Glazer is there to help Mayo make the transition to head coaching, a role that is “unique” but not entirely unique. But questions remain about what his role will be in this meeting. There is a big difference between helping with a job interview and making a job offer on a website.Wolff’s relationship with Van Pelt may help alleviate some of the concerns.
Because subsequent hires made it clear the Patriots relied heavily on his network when building their staff. New England linebackers coach T. McCartney, offensive line coach Scott Peters, senior offensive assistant Ben McAdoo and defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery further demonstrated that there is a clear connection. It’s becoming increasingly clear who is involved in the Patriots’ biggest decisions.
