Patriots star quarterback Jerod Mayo hopes to make that difference on defense.
The Patriots’ defense in 2024 could be similar to Bill Belichick’s defense, which ran New England for more than 20 years. New head coach Jerod Mayo and defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington don’t buy into the plans of the greatest coach in NFL history.
However, there will be some changes. And Matthew Judon talked about those changes when he appeared on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Felger & Mazz” on Thursday.”I think we’re going to play a little more aggressive,” Judon said. “…I think it will be a new manual because the coach, the philosophy and the plan are different.”Judon was then asked if the new playbook will force Patriots quarterbacks to learn new terminology.”I don’t think there will be another term,” he said. “Mayo was always there. But I think it’s going to be a different playbook because it’s a different person making the calls. I think Mayo wants to run his own thing and show his uniqueness, and (Covington) wants to run his own thing and play his own role. So I don’t know if it’s going to be a completely different playbook, but it’s going to be Jerod Mayo’s playbook.
Judon also said he is looking forward to playing an aggressive brand of football. “If we’re going to chase down and rush the quarterback and make him uncomfortable, that’s what I want to do,” he said.Judon missed most of the 2023 season after straining his biceps in New England’s Week 4 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. But the star runner said he has fully recovered and is ready to compete next season.”I’m ready to play.”
