Patriots QB coach ‘targets’ 49ers connects with Browns.
It has been popular for NFL teams to target offensive line coaches who have spent time under San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay. The New England Patriots are no different and looked poised to win the title on Wednesday.
Patriots T.S. According to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, McCartney is the next running backs coach. McCartney most recently served as a running back for the Cleveland Browns, where he worked directly with New England offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt.
McCartney has an interesting anecdote. He played as a backup quarterback at LSU from 2007 to 2011 and won a national championship as a freshman. He transitioned into coaching after his playing career, working as a graduate student at LSU and Colorado before landing his first NFL job with the Browns in 2014.
Since then, the 34-year-old has held multiple roles as the quality control coach for the 49ers and quarterbacks coach for the Denver Broncos and Browns.
McCartney will be tasked with helping Van Pelt and new assistant Ben McAdoo reorganize the Patriots’ back room. Mack Jones and Bailey Zappé are under contract, but New England has plenty of options at forward and will likely add to the position this offseason. Could they use the third overall pick to sign another LSU quarterback, Jayden Daniels, to work with McCartney? That could be in the books.
