Wide receiver Kawaan Baker had 126 receptions for 1,829 yards and 16 touchdowns at South Alabama. However, in three seasons trying to make it to the NFL, Baker never caught a single pass in a regular season game. Baker decided to do just that on Tuesday when the New England Patriots announced he had signed a backup/futures contract.

Players with reserve/future contracts can be added to NFL team rosters on March 13, the first day of the 2023 NFL season, when the offseason expands from 53 players to 90 players.
Newly signed players can participate as part of the team in offseason practices, minicamps and OTAs. Only players not on an active NFL roster may sign reserve/future contracts. Baker did not play in the 2023 season. Baker entered the NFL as a seventh-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in the 2021 draft.
He spent his rookie season on the practice squad, recording 27 tackles on special teams in two games. On August 2, 2022, the NFL suspended Baker for six games for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy and program. Baker was waived by New Orleans on October 17, 2022. Baker joined the Green Bay Packers practice squad two days later and waited three weeks.
He spent the first week of December on the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad before returning to the Saints’ practice squad for the final two weeks of the 2022 season. After signing a reserve/future contract with New Orleans last offseason, Baker worked on preparing for the 2023 season before New Orleans cut the wide receiver from the regular season preseason roster on Aug. 29. The 28 players from Alabama High School and University have signed a reserve / future contract of NFL 2023.
