Rob Gronkowski thinks Atlanta would be the “best” destination for Bill Belichick after leaving the New England Patriots. But despite two interviews with the legendary coach, the Falcons decided to go in a different direction to replace Arthur Smith.
Atlanta hired Raheem Morris to replace Belichick, who ultimately did not claim any of the seven head coaching vacancies this cycle. Gronkowski, who starred for the Patriots under Belichick for nearly a decade, believes he knows why his former coach wasn’t hired in Atlanta.”I don’t think the Atlanta Falcons organization wanted to give up that much power and leave all the decisions up to Coach Belichick,” Gronkowski recently told FOX News. “Other than that, I think Coach Belichick would be a good fit.”Gronkowski may be right.
Falcons owner Arthur Blank wanted to hire Belichick, but feared that hiring him could change the Avalanche. The 71-year-old was also weighed down by his “cool relationship” with Atlanta president Rich McKay.Still, it’s hard to imagine Belichick agonizing over the Falcons’ decision. He can now take a year off after working hard as a manager for over 20 years and should look for even more attractive opportunities next year.
