Patriots rumors: GM pick could affect NFL Draft.
People around the NFL have no idea what New England is doing at GM. The Patriots have ushered in a new era by naming Jarod Mayo not only as head coach but also head of the front office, but have remained silent on who they will nominate as New England’s next general manager.Mayo is said to have been in contact with candidates, but there is a growing consensus that an internal candidate will step forward, with Eliot Wolfe and Matt Groh taking on that dual role. The Athletic’s Jeff Howe has a 2024 Senior Bowl prospect, and those around the NFL are interested in the Patriots general manager’s plans.
Whoever it is could have a big impact on whether or not New England takes a quarterback with the third pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. “Internal candidates Eliot Wolff and Matt Groh were also considered,” Howe wrote Saturday. “If Wolf runs the show, expect the Patriots to work long and hard to build a left tackle with the No. 3.
“Tackle is a huge need for the Patriots, and they figure taking a tackle in the first round is safer than risking someone with a Day 2 or Day 3 pick. However, fans may be disappointed if a quarterback is not selected with the third pick. Groh, the director of player personnel, told reporters at the Senior Bowl that the team’s process hasn’t changed, but the tone could change depending on how the front office is structured.
Howe said the Patriots GM position is highly valued in the NFL and that the interest is not negative, but rather a career opportunity. Whoever gets the job will be responsible for replacing Bill Belichick and making New England relevant again.
