NFL Rumors: How the Patriots GM Job Is Viewed Around the League.
This makes a big difference in how we view the offensive coordinator job. The state of the Patriots front office is up in the air and people around the NFL are wondering.New England filled the coordinator position under first-year head coach Jarod Mayo, but the front office is another concern after Bill Belichick parted ways with the franchise. Player representative Matt Groh and scouting director Eliot Wolff will continue in their roles, with the latter expected to receive a “significant” raise. Groh attended the 2024 Senior Bowl and said the process will be the same for the NFL draft, but could be different if Wolf runs the show.
Mayo has been reaching out to candidates, and just like they hired Alex Van Pelt as offensive coordinator, an outside candidate could generate significant interest for a quick hire. The Athletic’s Jeff Howe spoke with NFL and New England sources about what they think the team will do with a general manager. However, despite the negative perception of the offensive coordinator position, the general manager position is drawing interest from league officials.
“Whether the Patriots name an official general manager or not, they will be hiring someone to run the department, and this looks like an attractive vacancy,” Howe wrote Saturday. “They will have a clean slate with a new manager and owner, Robert Kraft, who is highly regarded by league leaders.”So the reason league sources are interested in the hiring process for department heads is because they’re hoping to get some action.”If a new front office oversees free agency and the draft, it would certainly be a great opportunity to try to make the Patriots relevant after a disastrous season.
