The two teams that had the oldest coaches in the NFL last year have the youngest coaches in the league this year.This follows the Seattle Seahawks’ decision to hire Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike McConnell as their new head coach, according to multiple reports on Wednesday.
McDonald became the youngest head coach in the NFL at age 36. He’s a year younger than Jerod Mayo, who briefly became the league’s youngest coach after the New England Patriots named him Bill Belichick’s successor.
The Patriots and Seahawks are making similar youth moves with their draftees. Seattle went from coach Pete Carroll, the oldest player in the league at 72, to a rising star in the middle of his age. Additionally, the Patriots have the second-oldest coach behind Belichick (71). They now have their second youngest coach Mayo.
McDonald was a key figure behind the Ravens’ dominant defense this season, leading the team to a No. 1 seed in the AFC and an appearance in the conference title game.The Seahawks position became available this offseason after the Seattle owners decided to hire Carroll as their head coach. However, Carroll will remain with the team as a consultant.
