Cam Newton has heard these “whispers” about the Patriots pursuing Jerod Mayo.

    “I thought he’d be next.”

Cam Newton wasn’t impressed that the Patriots selected Jerod Mayo over Bill Belichick.New England joins Mayo in its first head coaching change in decades. Robert Kraft and company did not find Belichick’s successor, instead using the succession plan of the Mayo deal to move the 37-year-old.Mayo has been considered the head coach since joining Belichick’s staff in 2019.

When Cam Newton arrived in New England a year later, the veteran quarterback knew Mayo was next.”Jerod Mayo has every right to be the next in charge,” Newton said on his fourth and first broadcast, according to Boston.com records. “When I was there, I knew he was going to be next.”Newton added: “He had a lot of meetings and a lot of leadership. It was like this: “There were whispers, but that was 2-3 years ago.”The 2015 NFL MVP’s anecdote lines up with a report by Sports Illustrated’s Albert Brier.

He said Mayo first learned of his prospect as Belichick’s successor two years ago. Kraft said during Mayo’s introductory news conference that he was already confident in the former lineman’s head coaching abilities in 2019.
