A struggling QB may not have much trade value. The Patriots may think Mack Jones is redeemable, but they’re not.
It wouldn’t be surprising if New England could trade their quarterback, as MassLive’s Mark Daniels reported Monday morning. However, Daniels reported that “the door is not closed” on Jones playing for the Patriots in 2024, with Bill Belichick out of the picture.”Sources indicate the Patriots have no plans to opt-out of Jones’ five-year contract,” Daniels wrote.
“We have Mayo (coach Jerod) at quarterback and he could stay on the roster, but if the right deal is on the table, the team won’t hesitate to move him. The Patriots are expected to look for quarterback help this offseason.
Opting Jones for a fifth year would make him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in football. So the Patriots’ decision to opt out is no surprise.Jones has one year and $2.7 million left on his rookie contract, making him a cheap backup or bridge QB option.
Perhaps New England can decide that Jones brings more value to the roster than a trade chip.So it’s hard to imagine the Patriots not using the third overall pick to select a new franchise quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft.
