If Bill Belichick can’t land a coaching job now, what team will be able to hire him in 2025?
Bill Belichick became the first free agent of this century. But nobody seems to care.Even after a legendary run with the New England Patriots that led them to the most Super Bowl wins in NFL history and a career record 333 wins and 178 losses (including playoffs), the team is looking for a new head coach. Belichick, 71. Seven teams (not including the Patriots) made head coaching changes this offseason.
There was only one person who took it seriously. The Atlanta Falcons were the only team to interview Belichick, but after two meetings with him, they went in a different direction and selected former Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris on Thursday.Only two teams looking for a coach have expressed interest in Belichick. The Washington Chiefs and Seattle Seahawks are both involved in second-round draft interviews, and neither team has met Belichick for the first time. Why did this happen? The correct scenario is always assumed.
Belichick is expected to want more than $20 million a year, which is what most owners are willing to pay their manager. Tom Brady is 29-38 since leaving New England. The Patriots head coach and de facto GM does things differently. While many owners are willing and eager to cooperate, some are understandably reluctant to give complete authority to a single person. It’s as if Belichick, who is chasing Don Shula’s hitting streak (a mark he surpassed at 15 years old), may not be an NFL coach in 2024 for the first time in 49 years.
The wait for his new managerial job could stretch to 2025 – if he still wants it by then. With that in mind, let’s have some fun imagining the teams and scenarios that could bring Belichick back into the head coaching ranks next year.
