Patriots wide receiver Kaishon Butte was arrested in connection with a minor sports betting scheme while a student at Louisiana State University, officials said Thursday. Louisiana State Police announced arrests and charges in the case. Police said Booth, who was initially charged with computer fraud and gambling prohibited for persons under 21, could face additional charges as the investigation continues.
Police said the investigation began in July when an online gambling company contacted investigators about “sports gambling by a prohibited person.”Police said authorities learned Butte, now 21, engaged in sports gambling between April 6, 2022 and May 7, 2023. Butte was 20 at the time and was using an alias to avoid Louisiana’s legal age for sports betting, police said.
Police said investigators believe Butte placed more than 8,900 bets between April 6, 2022, and May 7, 2023, including at least seven on NCAA football games. Butte, who played football at LSU, placed at least six bets on LSU football, according to Louisiana State Police. Police said Burt was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Jail on Thursday.
A Patriots spokesman returned to New England and had this to say about the situation: “The New England Patriots are aware that Keyshawn Butte is cooperating with Louisiana law enforcement in connection with the investigation into allegations of underage gambling while he was student at Louisiana State University.”The Patriots selected stand no. 187 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. Butte played three games in the 2023 season.
