Bill Belichick appears to be one of the favorites for a coaching job after parting ways with the New England Patriots earlier this month. However, only one team has revealed that they have interviewed the legendary coach.
The Atlanta Falcons recently completed their second interview with Belichick. At one point, it looked like the deal was done. However, recent reports say Belichick has “lost momentum” against the Falcons, while other reports say the search is still “wide open.”Devin McCourty, who played for Belichick his entire NFL career, is surprised there aren’t more teams seeking his services.
“Absolutely. I was very surprised that only one team showed interest. Taking a step back, the team is likely looking for a younger coach. That’s how I feel,” McCourty said Wednesday on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show.” “But I thought about the possibility of having a guy like Belichick, who is the greatest coach of all time. I would say it’s weird to see the situation in Atlanta because Bill and (Jim) Harbaugh are there for the second interview.
But there are other people I interview first.Harbaugh made a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers following McCourty’s interview, but McCourty’s comments remain. The three-time Super Bowl champion Tennessee Titans interviewed Brian Callahan and told him they signed him because they liked him and didn’t want him to go anywhere else.Belichick’s age (he turns 72 in April) could work against him.
Because he might want the same control over the franchise that he had in New England. McCourty has many accomplishments, but he believes age can be a factor preventing teams from interviewing top NFL coaches.”That’s right. However, there aren’t many coaches other than long-term coaches, and when we look at the hiring process, there aren’t cases where coaches with 35 to 40 years of coaching experience become head coaches

Of course, younger coaches have been with the Patriots more often. Jerod Mayo, 37, became the youngest head coach in the NFL with his official promotion to New England. But there’s no doubt Belichick will take the franchise to the next level despite being 70 years old. It will be interesting to see if Belichick gets more interviews now that Harbaugh is off the board, or if he ends up in Atlanta.
