The Green Bay Packers are officially looking for a new defensive coordinator following the release of Joe Barry. Most reports indicate that Barry may remain on the Packers staff in some capacity, but his time as DC has come to an end. This means the Packers have a big hole to fill on their coaching staff. One name quickly jumps out because he previously “interviewed with the Packers” for the same position.
The Green Bay Packers have connected with a former interviewee who previously opted out of an interview with the team.Tennessee Titans pass rusher/defensive coordinator Chris Harris speaks before OTA practice at Ascension Saint Thomas Sports Park in Nashville. A few years ago, Titans running back Chris Harris had an impressive interview with the team, according to NFL Network’s Albert Breer.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports Harris will interview for the Chicago Bears defensive coordinator job. However, the exact date of the interview has not been revealed. After interviewing for the Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator position last week, Harris is currently applying for both positions. From 2020 to 2022, Harris coached the Washington Chiefs’ defensive backs, and in that time, the team finished eighth in pass defense and fourth in total defense, solidifying Harris’ status as a rising star.
The Packers need an additional focused defensive coordinator.
Yes, the Packers’ rush defense should be the focus this offseason, but the pass defense also needs some work. Especially considering the depth and safety at corner is uncertain. After announcing his retirement from the NFL, the former safety began working as a coach. Like his playing career, Harris’ coaching career began with the Bears. Harris joined the Chargers as an assistant defensive backs coach after spending two years as the defensive quality control coach in Chicago.
Washington hired him for his first full-time coaching position in 2020. Harris has been successful in pass protection wherever he has worked. Taking him to Green Bay would make a lot of sense.
