The Los Angeles Chargers are ‘within striking distance’ of landing a championship coach, but it’s not Bill Belichick. Instead, the Chargers want Jim Harbaugh to take the team with a rookie coach from Michigan to the national championship game in Michigan.
NFL Network’s Miek Garafolo reported Tuesday that Harbaugh is in Los Angeles for his second meeting with the Chargers. Garafolo reported that the Chargers have made Harbaugh a “very strong financial proposition” and have now reached an agreement on personnel, including the general manager role.
As of Wednesday morning, the two sides had not yet reached an agreement. “For a lot of people in attendance, it felt like it was the end of the road. He’s not there yet,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport said. If the Chargers do plan to land Harbaugh, it eliminates another potential landing spot for Bill Belichick, who once seemed like the perfect landing spot for the former Patriots coach.
Now it looks like Los Angeles will be able to fill their head coaching vacancy without interviewing Belichick. Harbaugh, who led the 49ers to the Super Bowl while in San Francisco, has been busy getting back into the NFL in recent years. But these rumors have intensified in recent months. Especially after Harbaugh won a title with the Wolves and was suspended for three games due to a tag-stealing scandal.
