Bill Belichick has only interviewed for one NFL head coaching job since parting ways with the New England Patriots. It could be due to a lack of interest, but there are certain teams and situations Belichick would like to avoid.
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Belichick doesn’t want his next coaching job to be with a team in a major media market.”As a source explained this weekend, this stems from a desire to avoid the journalistic dynamic of developing sources at all levels of the organization,” Florio wrote Tuesday. “With fewer reporters covering the team, Belichick won’t have to worry about reaching the people he needs to rely on to get things done.
“Assuming Brian Callahan completes his contract with the Tennessee Titans, there are currently five head coaching vacancies in the NFL. The other five teams looking for a coach are the Falcons, Los Angeles Chargers, Washington Commanders, Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks.
If Belichick wants to avoid major media markets, he’d probably prefer to avoid Los Angeles. He only seems to have real interest in Atlanta, though everyone else has to be honest. Of course, there are other teams, like the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles. Florio reported last week that there is a belief in the NFL that both teams have expressed interest in Belichick, but the 71-year-old has not responded.
If true, the Dallas and Philly media markets could have been a factor for Belichick. The Cowboys appear to be sticking with Mike McCarthy, while the Eagles are committed to Nick Sirianni.Rex Ryan mentioned another interesting landing spot for Belichick this week, but it could be a major new media market.
