Which free agents should the New England Patriots target if they move on from Bill Belichick? There will be a lot of changes for the New England Patriots with Bill Belichick leaving. They drafted Jerod Mayo, and even though he’s been working under Belichick since 2019, there’s no denying he has his own ideas and plans. It could be a breath of fresh air for a franchise that has suddenly stagnated over the past two seasons.
Of course, changing strategy is only part of the battle. New England also needs to shake up its roster. With that in mind, here are six highly touted free agents looking to return to the top of the AFC East.
6. Tyrone Smith, O.T
Trent Brown left the end of the year out the door and disappeared. The Pats should trade him and move for a young quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft. That means they need a reliable quarterback, and one of the league’s best is waiting in the wings in free agent Tyron Smith. In 2011, the Dallas Cowboys drafted Smith 9th overall out of USC.
He started on the right but moved to the left in 2012 and has been working with horses ever since. The only issue is durability or lack thereof. Smith hasn’t played a full season since 2015, but has appeared in 13 games this year, also marking the Cowboys’ only playoff appearance. Dallas might be willing to make a move that could benefit the Pats. Of course, there are risks, but the rewards are worth it.
