The New England Patriots checked off their offseason to-do list and named Jerod Mayo their new coach. Another box he needs to check is quarterback.Mack Jones had a mediocre third year, sitting on the bench at No. 4 before Bailey Zappé became the permanent starter for the remainder of the season.
Jones hasn’t made much progress, and the biggest question heading into 2024 is whether the Patriots will give him another shot or move on from the Alabama product. But if you ask James White, he could see Jones coming back.
On the latest episode of Eye On Foxborough, the three-time Super Bowl champion sat down with MassLive Patriots reporter Karen Guredian to discuss why he thinks the quarterback could return to New England for the 2024 season.”I’m not surprised.
Everyone was saying things like “cease and desist.” Maybe a change of scenery is what he wants, maybe it’s good for him,” White said. “But I’ve always said this: I really love him on the roster. Whether they win or not, whether they draft a rookie or bring in an experienced player, he could be a player that competes for a starting spot.
He has been successful in this league for the past two years. Things didn’t go your way, but if you bring in the right offensive coordinator and let him compete with someone else, who knows what will happen next season?A change of scenery will likely help Jones, but he will also benefit from an improved offense, including a new offensive coordinator.
It’s unclear what the future holds for Jones. It will certainly be interesting to see what Mayo decide to do with this position. Especially since the Patriots have the no. 3 in the 2024 NFL Draft and some intriguing free agent quarterbacks.
