Andre Onana, Manchester United’s number one goalkeeper, has declared his willingness to play in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
According to Naija News, the 27-year-old player wants to protect Cameroon, his home country’s national team goalpost, in the event set to take place in Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11.
Because to Onana’s decision, he will be unavailable for Manchester United’s upcoming matches. These include the Premier League, the FA Cup, and, if Cameroon reaches the final, the Carabao Cup and the Champions League.
Onana, who joined at Old Trafford this summer in a £47.2 million transfer from Inter Milan, was expected to miss the 2023 AFCON competition following a spat with head coach Rigobert Song at the 2022 World Cup.
Remember that the player left Cameroon’s camp in Qatar to return home.
Onana, on the other hand, returned to help the Indomitable Lions beat Burundi 3-0 in September and played in a 1-0 friendly loss to Senegal this month.
United were unsure whether they would lose Onana at the start of 2024, but the UK Metro reports that Onana has decided to serve his country at AFCON.
