Mark Pope has delivered another major recruiting victory for Kentucky basketball, securing a commitment from one of the most intriguing prospects in the 2027 recruiting class. However, while Wildcats fans are celebrating the addition of a 7-foot-5 center, there is one important detail about the commitment that makes this development even more interesting.
Kentucky landed Cherif Millogo, a highly regarded big man who chose the Wildcats over several major programs, including BYU, USC, Louisville, Arizona, and North Carolina. SEC rivals Arkansas and Tennessee were also among the schools pursuing him.
According to ESPN recruiting insider Jeff Borzello, Millogo is the No. 2 center and No. 8 overall prospect in ESPN’s SC Next 100. His commitment makes him the highest-ranked recruit Pope has landed since becoming Kentucky’s head coach.
That is a significant achievement for a program that has been working to establish itself as a major destination for elite high school talent under Pope.
But here is the detail Kentucky fans may find particularly interesting: Millogo is still developing physically despite already standing an incredible 7-foot-5.
His size is obviously one of his biggest advantages, but his potential goes beyond his measurements. He also possesses a 7-foot-9 wingspan, impressive mobility for someone his height, and the ability to contribute offensively beyond the basket.
On3’s Jack Pilgrim described him as one of the most physically imposing big men in the country, praising his agility, shooting ability, and potential as a rim protector.
However, Pilgrim also noted that Millogo still needs to improve his strength and conditioning while gaining valuable game experience.
That distinction is important because Kentucky is not simply recruiting a finished product. Pope is landing a prospect with tremendous physical tools and considerable room to grow.
If his development continues as expected, Millogo could eventually become a major defensive presence and give Kentucky a different dimension in the frontcourt.
His commitment also gives Pope another important piece of the future. Millogo becomes Kentucky’s second commitment in the recruiting class, joining Ryan Hampton, another highly rated prospect who chose the Wildcats over the summer.
For Pope, beating several established programs for a top-10 recruit is another encouraging sign of his recruiting progress.
Kentucky fans should certainly be excited about what Millogo could eventually bring to Lexington. Still, his development will be just as important as his remarkable height and recruiting ranking.
The potential is obvious. Now, Pope and his coaching staff will have the opportunity to help turn that potential into something special in a Kentucky uniform.
